A polydactyl Maine Coon is born with extra toes — often looking like little mittens or snowshoes. It's a natural, harmless genetic trait, and it's deeply woven into Maine Coon history: the extra-toed cats were prized on ships and farms in early New England, where their big, broad paws made them famously good mousers in the snow. Before modern show standards, a large share of Maine Coons were polydactyl.
Polydactyly does not affect a cat's health, movement, or lifespan — it simply adds a toe (or a few) and a lot of personality to an already impressive paw. Many owners say the oversized "mitten paws" are their favorite thing about their cat.
We have polydactyl cats in our breeding program, so polydactyl kittens appear in some of our litters.
